The Ecumenical Minority Scholarship Fund was established in 1993, with the intention of making a small but meaningful attempt to remedy racial injustice in our society and to publicly show opposition to racial injustice and inequities in our society.
Funding
23 religious organizations all belonging to the Iowa City Consultation of Religious Communities and several individual donors, so far, all from Johnson County, have contributed to the fund over the past 12 years, some giving to the fund every year and others giving occasionally. As of April 2007 the fund has a negative balance of $1,505.00. Donations in 2006 were extremely low due to a miscommunication regarding solicitation and follow-up of pledges with previous donors.
Students
To be eligible for a scholarship, a student must be a member of an under-represented minority group, a graduate from an Iowa high school and demonstrate financial need. The fund has fully or partially funded tuition for eight students. Scholarships have been provided to eight (8) students from Burlington, Mt Pleasant, Cedar Falls and Waterloo.
Currently, Tracey McCampbell receives a full scholarship of approx. $5000 per year and
Ashley Granger receives 1/2 of one semester cost per year of approx $1,200. Tracy and Ashley will graduate in May of 2008 when a new recipient(s) will be selected.
Please help keep this small but very important scholarship fund alive!
